A lot of time was invested in creating the smaller awl. It is a generational piece that was passed down in a family group. It could have been used to push sinew through hides to create clothing, or for pressure flaking in forming stone tools. The second tool is more utilitarian and was made quickly. It was probably used for pressure flaking.
Cultural Insight
Given that an awl is a tool used to weave together materials, its symbolism could extend beyond its practical use to represent the act of bringing together or connecting—whether that’s people, ideas, or the spiritual and earthly realms.
